Updated: Paint Narrowboat bottoms

There is a debate that rages in the narrowboat world as to whether the bottom should be painted. As far as I am concerned there is only one answer to the question: Yes it must be.

If you believe some people there is no oxygen two feet below the water surface and the bottom does not rust. Some say the paint gets worn off so it is not worth it. Let me show you two pictures of the bottom of narrowboats so you can make up your own mind. One is a boat built in 1998 that has not been painted, the other is a 1970′s boat that has, the last time about three years ago. The unpainted one has been at a mooring most of the time, the painted one is constantly cruising.

Dezincified skin fittings

The image below was taken of the engine inlet skin fittings on a fairly new (3 year old) luxury powerboat that I surveyed recently.

It provides a good demonstration as to what to look for on a skin fitting that is beginning to fail.

The pink blotches visible on the yellow metal of the body of the skin fitting are where the zinc has been leached out of the brass.

When you have your boat out of the water, if you see any signs of pink when you scrape the fittings, just change the fitting with a new bronze one. (Check that it was not just painted with a red paint first though!)

Skin Fittings standard only specifies 5 years

Every so often someone raises an issue that is difficult to comprehend why it has been allowed to happen.

The International Standard for Marine Skin fittings specifies that skin fittings only need to be serviceable for 5 years.

“So what?”, you say. “Good manufacturers fit Bronze fittings that will last a lifetime, surely?”

Survey at Chichester Marina

I was commisioned to do a pre-purchase survey on a nice boat in Chichester Marina last week. The marina staff were helpful, the lift out crew were great and left the boat in the slings for me overnight. With two cranes they are flexible with regards to surveys and surveyors.

As a first visit to a marina/boatyard it was excellent.

Good luck with the London Marathon to the broker – Grant Borthwick of Opal.

It is great to get good feedback

It is always fantastic to receive nice unsolicited feedback from clients.
So my thanks to both GH and DL for the feedback they gave me for the surveys I have done for them. They have given me permission to use their on the client feedbacks page on the website.
I am thrilled at their comments. It makes the job really worthwhile!

9 Regular Checks to Make of Your Yacht’s LPG Gas System

Your gas safety can be greatly improved by making a few regular checks yourself.

1 – Check the markings on the flexible gas hoses. For use on boats the hose should be marked BS3212. The date of manufacture is also on the hose and you should think about changing it within five years of this date. If it meets the criteria below though, and is in good condition, then there is no requirement to change it.
